The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a major awards ceremony draws close, one notices an outcry for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
