Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors around that, not only his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
